My 2.8-year-old started playgroup three weeks ago and still cries when I leave. The teachers say she calms down in 10 minutes and plays happily, but the morning scenes are breaking my heart. Parents who've been through this, how long did it take and did anything help?

Six weeks for my son. What helped most: a very short, very consistent goodbye ritual. Hug, high-five, 'Mumma always comes back', and leave without lingering. The lingering makes it worse, they read your hesitation.

Teacher here, the '10 minutes and playing happily' report is genuinely good news and very typical. The children who worry us are the withdrawn ones, not the criers. Ask for a photo mid-morning; seeing her playing will heal you faster than her.

We gave our daughter a small handkerchief with my perfume on it in her bag. Sounds silly, worked wonders. Also: never sneak away without saying bye, it fixes today and ruins the whole month.
