The honest answer: it depends far more on your city and locality than on the brand on the signboard. Here is what parents actually paid in the 2025-26 academic year.
Metro cities
In Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata, mainstream preschools charge roughly Rs 60,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh per year all-inclusive. Within that band:
- Budget and neighbourhood schools: Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000 a year. Often independent schools running out of converted homes, with smaller batches and simpler infrastructure.
- Mid-range, including most franchise chains (Kidzee, EuroKids, Bachpan, Hello Kids and similar): Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.8 lakh a year depending on the locality.
- Premium chains and international-curriculum schools (Maple Bear, Kangaroo Kids, standalone Montessori houses, preschools attached to big-name K-12 schools): Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh, and a handful in South Delhi, South Mumbai and central Bengaluru cross Rs 4 lakh.
Tier-2 cities
In cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Chandigarh, the whole scale shifts down. Budget schools start near Rs 25,000 a year, the broad middle sits between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1.1 lakh, and premium options top out around Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh.
What the advertised fee hides
The number quoted on the phone is almost never the full amount. Add up:
- Admission or registration fee: Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, usually one-time and usually non-refundable.
- Kit and material charges: Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 a year for books, worksheets and craft supplies.
- Uniform: Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000.
- Transport: Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 a month if you use the school van.
- Annual day, photos, field trips: budget another few thousand across the year.
A school quoting Rs 8,000 a month can easily cost Rs 1.3 lakh a year once everything is added. Always ask for the all-inclusive annual figure in writing before you compare schools.
A sanity check
Fees do not map neatly to quality. The two things that predict a good experience, teacher stability and adult-to-child ratio, exist at every price point.
