Curriculum labels in India are marketing first and philosophy second, so understand what each one means and then check whether the school actually practises it.
Playway (the Indian default)
Most Indian chains, Kidzee, EuroKids, Bachpan, Hello Kids and hundreds of independents, run a playway or "eclectic" method: learning through songs, games, craft, and themed weeks, moving toward worksheets in LKG and UKG. It maps neatly onto what Indian primary schools expect, so the transition to Class 1 is smooth. If the teachers are warm and the ratio is good, playway serves the vast majority of children perfectly well.
Montessori
A genuine Montessori environment has mixed-age classrooms (roughly 2.5 to 6 years together), long uninterrupted work cycles of 2 to 3 hours, specific didactic materials (pink tower, golden beads, sandpaper letters), and teachers ("adults" or "directresses") trained through AMI, AMS or IMTC-style diplomas. Children choose their own work; the adult observes and guides.
The catch: in India the word Montessori is unregulated. Thousands of schools with "Montessori" on the board run ordinary playway classes with a shelf of wooden toys. Ask two questions: "Are your teachers Montessori-trained, and by whom?" and "Are classrooms mixed-age with a full work cycle?" If the answer is vague, it is a playway school with a Montessori signboard, which is not necessarily bad, just not what the label claims.
Waldorf (Steiner)
Waldorf preschools delay formal literacy entirely: no letters or numbers before age 6 or 7. Days are built on rhythm, storytelling, natural materials, free imaginative play, and almost no plastic or screens. There are only a few dozen genuine Waldorf-inspired schools in India, mostly in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai, and they suit families who are comfortable with a child who cannot read at 6 but tells magnificent stories. If your child will move to a mainstream CBSE school for Class 1, the transition needs planning.
How to choose
- Anxious about Class 1 admission interviews and worksheets? Playway or a structured kindergarten aligns best.
- Value independence and concentration, and found a verified Montessori? Excellent choice, especially for ages 3 to 6.
- Deeply anti-worksheet, flexible about school boards later? Waldorf is worth the drive.
Execution beats philosophy every time. A visit that shows calm children, engaged teachers and a good ratio matters more than any label.
