Closer than you think. Distance is the most underrated factor in preschool choice, and the one parents most often regret compromising on.
The benchmark
For a 2-to-4-year-old, aim for a one-way commute of 15 to 20 minutes or less, which in most Indian cities means roughly a 2 to 4 km radius from home. Walking distance is the gold standard if your locality offers it.
Why it matters more than brand
- The maths is brutal. A preschool day is 3 to 3.5 hours. A 40-minute commute each way means your toddler spends over a third of the "school" experience strapped in traffic. Doubled across a year, that is hundreds of hours of car seat instead of play, naps cut short, and lunches pushed late.
- Sick days and pickups. Small children fall ill often and need mid-session pickups. When school is 5 minutes away, a fever call is a blip; at 45 minutes, it is a crisis, and you will hesitate before choosing the school van for a child this small on a long route.
- Routine survival. The 8 am battle of shoes and breakfast is winnable when the buffer is small. Long commutes make every slow morning a missed day, and attendance quietly collapses in monsoon and winter.
- Community. Classmates who live nearby become park friends and birthday-party friends; the school WhatsApp group becomes a neighbourhood network. A school across town gives your child friends they can never casually meet.
When a longer commute can be worth it
- A genuinely special fit, a verified Montessori or a special-needs-inclusive program, that simply does not exist nearby.
- The school sits on a parent's office route, so the child rides with a parent, not a van. Door-to-door with a parent at 25 minutes beats a 15-minute van ride alone for many families.
- You are targeting a preschool attached to the K-12 school you want for Class 1, where continuity carries real admission advantages.
Even then, treat 30 minutes one-way as a hard ceiling for this age group.
Practical test
Do the actual drive at 8:30 am on a weekday, not on a Sunday visit. Indian traffic can turn "3 km away" into 35 minutes. Shortlist on the map first: open our search engine, filter by your city, and start with everything inside your radius before you compare curricula.
