Parents use the words interchangeably; the industry does not. Knowing the difference helps you ask the right questions.
Preschool: a program
A preschool runs a structured learning program for a fixed few hours, typically 9 am to 12:30 pm. There is a curriculum (playway, Montessori, whatever the school follows), a teacher with an early-childhood qualification leading circle time and activities, an academic-style calendar, and age-banded classes: playgroup, nursery, LKG, UKG.
Daycare: care across the day
A daycare (creche) provides safe supervision for the length of a working day, often 8 am to 7 pm. The essentials are different: meals, structured naps on proper bedding, hygiene routines, more caregivers per child for the little ones, and flexibility, half-day, full-day, even hourly plans. Learning happens, but care is the product.
The hybrid most working parents actually use
Most Indian chains now run preschool plus extended daycare in the same building: the child attends the preschool program in the morning, then stays on for lunch, nap and play in the daycare wing. Brands like Klay, Ipsaa, Footprints and many Kidzee or EuroKids franchisees run exactly this model. It is usually the best of both worlds, one commute, familiar adults, and a real curriculum.
If you are evaluating a hybrid, interrogate the afternoon half separately, because the glossy part of the tour is always the morning classroom:
- Who supervises after 1 pm, trained staff or a skeleton crew?
- Where exactly do children nap, and how often is bedding washed?
- Is lunch cooked in-house or brought from home? See the kitchen.
- What is the afternoon adult-to-child ratio? It should not collapse.
- Are there CCTV cameras in the nap and play areas, and can parents view them?
- What are late-pickup rules and charges?
Costs
Daycare adds roughly Rs 6,000 to Rs 18,000 a month on top of preschool fees in metros, depending on hours and meals, so a preschool-plus-daycare arrangement often totals Rs 1.5 to 3 lakh a year in a big city.
How to decide
If a parent or grandparent is home by early afternoon, plain preschool is enough. If both parents work full days, choose a hybrid over a separate daycare pickup at noon; the midday transfer is the most fragile link in any childcare chain, and eliminating it is worth real money.
